My OJT Experience

As an information Technology student, i can truly say that experience is the best teacher. Learning brought about by experiences gives us a better insight on things and its retention could last a lifetime.

We are required to take On-the-Job Training (OJT) before proceeding to our next year in college. This is to engage us in productive work so we could acquire the knowledge and skills required for our profession in the future. This is also the student's opportunity to be involves in the workplace and more importantly, apply the theoretical concepts we learned in school.

Confucius once said, "If all i do is hear, I will forget. If I hear and see, I will remember. If I hear, see and do, I will understand". It is important to show the students how things are done but getting this done on their own is a different story and this training (OJT) bridges the gap between the two.

It's been a week since I finished my OJT. I was assigned in the Office of the City Administrator of the Olongapo City Hall.

My first day there, was nerve-wracking. Focusing, staying motivated, finishing tasks immediately without missing anything has always been on my mind since then. The fun and welcoming employees enabled me to easily adjust to the environment.

The department is tasked to safeguard the important documents that are needed to be signed by the city's administrator. As a trainee, I was assigned to greet and assist the visitors that goes to the office that are in need of help.

I also did the primary task in the office such as filing, sorting of files, photocopying, writing payroll and contract, distributing memorandum etc. but despite the simple tasks given to me, I developed attentiveness, presence of mind, and good work ethics at work; my communication skills also improved. Also, having this grace under pressure while juggling a lot of work is something I have developed during my stay there.

Throughout my OJT period, I realized that discipline is important - I had to keep reminding myself to wake up early in the morning, always smile, get along with your co-workers, don't be lazy and always give your best. Also, reality is hard!

Working in the City Administrator's Office was such a meaningful experience. Even though it is not related to my course, it served as an eye opener to the real world. Aside from that, I was given the chance to work with kind-hearted people who really wanted to help others. More than being able to utilize the skills and knowledge I had, the lessons and stories that I brought a long with me are worth treasuring.

To the people who's reading my blog right now, probably you are wondering about OJT or maybe you're just reading this for reference. But I want to share to you one of the most important things I have learned. DON'T BE AFRAID TO ASK because it is the simplest and most effective way of learning and avoiding errors REGARDLESS of what they would think of you. And if you are struggling now, always remember that an expert was once a beginner. So, work hard, dream big and never give up.

On-the-Job Training is a steppingstone to develop our potential and give us a glimpse on the career path we want to take. Enjoy what you are doing. Maybe you feel nervous at first, but once you put your heart and dedication into it, it will be fun and easier. This experience molded my character and develop me as a good employee someday.
